PLAR – Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition

Applicants whose training was completed at an institution not on our list of recognized teacher training program can apply to TESL Canada for certification. You will not be eligible under our regular certification scheme because your training is not from a recognized program, but will be recommended to PLAR (Prior Learning Assessment Recognition).

IMPORTANT: Please note delivery services such as Purolator, FedEx, etc., do not deliver to post office boxes. Do not send your documents by courier. Canada Post Express is a viable option. If you still require courier service, you must contact TESL Canada prior to sending. Thank you.

English Language Proficiency Scores

Important: From October 1st, 2015 onwards, TESL Canada will accept only IELTS Academic and TOEFL iBT. TESL Canada only accepts valid official scores. Any ELP test result provided must be current (scores completed more than two calendar years prior will not be accepted).

From November 24, 2025 onwards, applicants will be deemed to have met the English language proficiency requirement if they have completed an in-person Master's or Doctorate in a relevant field from a university where the language of instruction for that specific degree is in English and completed in one of the countries listed below.
